From the Principal

Dear Bellbird Park State Secondary College Community
I am privileged to have the opportunity to act as Principal at Bellbird Park State College this term. I have enjoyed my first few weeks at the college tremendously and want to thank the staff, students and wider school community for their warm welcome. I can already see what a wonderful school community we have here at Bellbird Park State Secondary College and I look forward to getting to know more of our students and families over the coming weeks.
So many wonderful learning experiences and events have already taken place this term. Some of the highlights have included our ANZAC day commemorations and most recently our Cultural Night Celebration.
ANZAC Day
It was my honour to represent the College along with our school captains and students at a number of local ANZAC day services a few weeks ago. Our students displayed exceptional behaviour as they paid their respects and listened to speeches from community members and staff who have served within the defence forces. Additionally, Grace did a wonderful job speaking at the Goodna Service, while Tia sang both the Australian and the New Zealand anthems wonderfully. Our students also did an outstanding job at our school assemblies, with a stirring rendition of the last post by Sol at the Junior Secondary assembly. On behalf of the entire school community, I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to all the staff and students and special guests who participated in our ANZAC Day ceremony. A special thank you in particular to the current and former defence force personnel who attended our ceremonies. Thank you for your unwavering dedication to honouring our ANZACs and for embodying the spirit of remembrance, reflection, and unity that lies at the heart of this commemorative day.
Culture Night & Harmony Day Performances
Last night we were treated to the first amazing performance of our Cultural Night Celebration. Our students showcased the rich diversity and talent within our school community as they captivated the audience with traditional dances from the many cultural groups that make up our school. Our students poured their hearts and souls into their performances, and wowed the audience with their passion and creativity. We look forward to another great performance tonight at our final show.
A huge thank you to all of the amazing teachers, support and administration staff, parents, community members and of course the students who were responsible for putting together such a wonderful show, which was a true celebration of culture, unity and artistic expression.
Academic Success & Attendance
This term we continue to focus on the enactment of our explicit improvement agenda, which has a clear focus on supporting all students to experience learning success. One of our key goals is to increase the proportion of students receiving a C or better in all subjects. After the completion of our term one assessment, we can see a significant improvement by a number of students in their learning outcomes. Our teachers, teacher aides, coordinators and Heads of Department are to be congratulated on the work that have been leading to support students to improve their outcomes.
With 5 weeks of the term to go, it is important that students attend each and every day to maximise their learning. Over the next few weeks students will be undertaking formative tasks and completing assignment drafts as we lead into assessment periods for both the junior and senior school. It is imperative that students are at school each and every day so they can access the learning experiences to practice the skills required to demonstrate learning success and growth.
Attendance plays an important role in shaping the academic achievements and overall wellbeing of our students. Each day in school presents invaluable opportunities for growth, learning, and connection that simply cannot be replicated elsewhere. Consistent attendance fosters a sense of routine that is essential for academic success. By attending every day, students develop crucial time management skills, learn to prioritise their commitments, and establish healthy habits that will support them well throughout their lives. Furthermore, regular attendance ensures that students have ample opportunities to engage with their peers, teachers and learning materials to maximise their potential and learning growth.
If you have any concerns about your child’s attendance or progress at school, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the college staff so we can be of support.
Parent -Teacher Interviews
We look forward to discussing the progress of your student(s) with you at our upcoming Parent-Teacher Interviews. Please note that these will take place on Thursday 23 May from 1:40pm – 5:30pm in the Sports Hall.
These interviews are a great opportunity for parents and carers to connect and consolidate the partnership with teachers. Student learning outcomes are greatly improved when parents and carers are a part of this process. I would strongly recommend parents and carers make the most of this opportunity.
Parents and carers are to be advised that bookings can be made via Daymap.
Open Afternoon – May 29 from 3:15pm
We invite you to join us for our highly anticipated College Open Afternoon on May 29th starting at 3:15 pm. This event serves as an invaluable opportunity for prospective students to learn more about our wonderful school. Specifically tailored for Year 6 students transitioning to Year 7, the Open Afternoon promises insights into our academic and extracurricular programs that await them. Explore subject displays, embark on guided school tours, and witness student performances that showcase the vibrant spirit of our community. Whether you're a current member of our school family or considering joining us in the future, we look forward to seeing you there.
Parents and carers are to be advised that bookings can be made via trybookings.
Yours sincerely

Deputies Corner

It’s great to be back “home” at Bellbird Park after almost 2.5 years away working in central office and a couple of other schools.
For those who aren’t aware, I was the foundation Teaching and Learning Deputy Principal in 2017 until the end of 2021 before Gouri Sharma stepped in for the last 2 years and did a wonderful job in my absence.
Having now been in several schools, I can safely say the culture at Bellbird Park is second to none and coming back, I have been welcomed by so many staff and senior students. The high expectations, no excuses, everyone can get, growth and success mantra is strong and can be evidenced all the time and every day.
Bellbird Park also continues to have some amazing teachers who give so much back to our students in order to support them to achieve and reach their potential. It’s great to see many of our students taking part in extracurricular activities such as cultural night and Kokoda.
Last week saw all of our Year 7’s take part in a team building and challenge adventure day at the school which our students enjoyed. Big shout out to Mr Carreon and our Year 7 teachers in coordinating and making this day such a success.

Mr Gavin Grant
Deputy Principal Year 7

At Bellbird Park we believe in nurturing not only academic excellence but also the development of strong leadership qualities in our students. Year 8 students have many opportunities to lead. Within each roll group, there are Rise Reps who are doing a great job. Students are also leading outside the classroom by participating in the lunchtime leadership sessions. These sessions introduce students to leadership skills that will prepare them for future College leadership roles such as Junior School Captain. It has been fantastic seeing students work and learn alongside Year 11 students.
It has also been very pleasing to see Year 8 students participating in the many community events such as ANZAC ceremonies. Students represented the College with pride and demonstrated the RISE values exceptionally well. As we move forward into the remainder of the term, we encourage all students to explore opportunities for leadership and to embrace the challenges and responsibilities that come with them. Opportunities for students to RISE to the leadership challenge can be through Rugby League teams, Kokoda Training, and upcoming formal assemblies.
Recently we had the privilege to welcome good friends, Police Liaison Officers Rex Gavet and Michael Bong back to the College to talk with students about making positive choices, contributing to the community and setting life goals. In the coming weeks, students will also have guests from BlueDog about mental fitness.
Students will shortly enter the assessment phase of the term. Now is a great time to set up a study schedule and map out time for assessment completion. The College also provides many supports through Homework Club, Maths and English tutorials and Thursday afternoon supervision centre. If you are unsure about assessment timelines, please refer to DayMap or contact your child’s class teachers for more information.
In closing, I want to extend my deepest appreciation to our student leaders for their dedication, passion, and commitment to making Bellbird Park a great learning place for all. Your efforts inspire us all and remind us of the incredible potential that lies within each and every one of our students. I look forward to seeing the great things the Year 8 students can achieve across the remainder of the term.

Ms Diane Pashen
Deputy Principal Year 8

The midway point of the term is an excellent opportunity to reflect on the progress made so far. We encourage both students and families to take some time to review achievements, assess goals, and identify areas for improvement. Teachers are available for support and guidance should you need assistance in this process, including at our upcoming parent teacher interviews.
Focus on Assessments:
In the coming weeks, all learning areas will be placing an emphasis on assessments. These assessments serve as valuable tools to gauge understanding, track progress, and provide feedback for growth. Students are encouraged to approach assessments with diligence, utilising study strategies and seeking clarification from teachers when needed. Don't forget to follow those draft due dates and take on board and implement feedback.
Circle of Control:
At BPSSC, we believe in empowering students to take control of their educational journey. One concept that supports this is the 'Circle of Control'. This highlights the importance of focusing on things within our control rather than worrying about external factors. As students navigate their time at BPSSC, we encourage them to:
- Manage Time Wisely by developing effective time management skills to balance academic responsibilities, extracurricular activities, and personal interests.
- Seek Support and utilising the resources available, including teachers in class and at the homework centre, to seek help and guidance when needed.
- Set Goals and establishing both short-term and long-term goals, and regularly assess progress towards achieving them.
- Embrace Challenges and view these challenges as opportunities for growth and learning rather than obstacles to success.
- Stay Positive by cultivating a positive mindset, persevere through setbacks, and celebrate successes along the way.

By focusing on what they can control, students can maximise their opportunities at BPSSC and lay the foundation for future success. If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to reach out.

Deputy Principal Year 9

As the first semester to 2024 winds down and exam season looms closer for our Year 10 and 11 students, it's natural to feel a mix of excitement, anticipation, and perhaps a hint of anxiety. But fear not! With the right mindset and preparation, students can tackle their exams with confidence and finesse. Here are some tips directed at our students to help navigate this crucial period at Bellbird Park State Secondary College senior phase of learning:
1. Start Early, Stay Consistent:
Procrastination is the arch-nemesis of success. Begin your revision early and maintain a consistent study schedule. Break down your subjects into manageable chunks, and allocate specific time slots for each. This approach not only helps in better retention but also reduces last-minute cramming.
2. Practice, Practice, Practice:
They say practice makes perfect, and it couldn't be truer for exams. Solve past papers, sample questions, and quizzes regularly. Not only does this help you gauge your progress, but it also familiarizes you with the exam format and time constraints. Identify patterns in questions and focus on improving your weaker areas.
3. Stay Organised:
Keep your study materials, notes, and resources well-organized. Use color-coded folders, digital apps, or any method that suits your style. A clutter-free study environment fosters better focus and productivity. Additionally, create a study timetable or checklist to track your progress and ensure you cover all topics before the exams.
4. Take Care of Yourself:
Amidst the hustle and bustle of exam preparation, don't forget to prioritize self-care. Get adequate sleep, maintain a balanced diet, and indulge in regular physical activity. Remember, a healthy mind resides in a healthy body. Take short breaks during study sessions to rejuvenate your mind and prevent burnout.
5. Seek Support When Needed:
Don't hesitate to reach out for help if you're struggling with any subject or concept. Your teachers, peers, and even online resources are invaluable sources of support. Form study groups, attend revision sessions, or schedule one-on-one discussions with your teachers. Collaboration and assistance can often provide fresh perspectives and clarity.
6. Stay Positive:
Finally, maintain a positive outlook throughout your exam journey. Believe in your abilities and stay confident in your preparations. Visualize success, but also be prepared to learn from any setbacks. Remember, exams are just one measure of your knowledge and skills. Your worth goes beyond a set of grades.
As you gear up for the upcoming exams, keep these tips in mind and trust in your abilities. Bellbird Park State Secondary College is rooting for your success every step of the way. Good luck, stay focused, and may your hard work yield fruitful results!
Mr Jason English
Deputy Principal Year 10 & 11

Welcome to the middle of term 2, Year 12. Our wonderful Year 12s have only 18 weeks of teaching and learning left until they break for external exams. Year 12 moves very quickly so that it is important that we are supporting our students to stay focused and engaged on their pathway. A few updates from me:
Attendance:
Our cohort attendance rate for Year 12 sits at 89.1% for the year. Our aim is 90% for each student and the cohort as a whole. School attendance is a powerful predictor of student outcomes and especially important in senior as all subjects have technical and practical subject matter that requires face to face learning opportunities.
A few reminders for attendance:
- 90% attendance rate is required for participation in senior extra-curricular activities such as the senior jersey (Year 11) and senior formal and mystery bus tour (Year 12).
- Illness, undertaking work experience or competing in a school sporting event are the only acceptable reasons for being absent from school.
- Events such as family holidays, birthdays and weddings are not considered valid grounds for extensions on assessment or absences from exams in the senior school, in line with the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority guidelines. Unapproved absences such as family holidays may impact on your student's academic achievement and senior pathway options as well as jeopardise their ability to obtain the Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE). For those considering booking family holidays, please ensure they are booked in our designated school holiday periods so that your child is not disadvantaged.
- Medical certificates are required to cover absences longer than 2 today to support assessment completion and extensions. Medical certificates assist with upholding attendance requirements for our end of year extra-curricular events.
Achievement:
This term students will receive their semester 1 (Unit 3 for Year 12) report card is a very important report card in relation to banking credits for our student’s QCEs. Bellbird Park will report these student report card academic gradings to the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA) so that they can accredit each student with credit points towards their Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE). Really strong performance in Unit 3 sets our students up for the best chance of success heading into their last unit- Unit 4. Students completing VET (Vocational Education and Training) qualification will attain credit points at the completion of their qualifications. For more information about the QCE please click on the link below to the QCAA Website:
Farewell:
Thank you to all the Year 12 students and families for a wonderful first 15 weeks of the school year in 2024 following a very successful 2023. It has been great getting to know them and seeing our Year 12s to blossom into mature young adults. As you may be aware I head off on maternity leave at the end of week 5 and will return to watch the Class of 2024 graduate in November. During my leave Mr Crausaz will be stepping up into the role of Deputy Principal of Senior Schooling for Year 11 and 12 and we are currently advertising to seek a replacement for his Head of Department Senior Schooling role.
Wishing all the students the best of luck while I'm away on maternity leave! Remember to stay curious, keep learning, and embrace every opportunity that comes your way. You've got this!

Another Awesome Praccie Brekky!
Each year, BPSSC hosts a large number of Preservice Teachers from Universities across SEQ. Periodically, our Teaching and Learning Team puts on a breakfast event for a group of these soon-to-be-teachers. The event features a meet-and-greet opportunity, as well as presentations from various school leaders aimed at preparing them for the demands of entering the classroom full-time. They also have the opportunity to ask frank and open questions about the work of teachers, and how to succeed in the first year of full-time teaching after graduation.
The feedback from preservice teachers on the session has always incredibly positive, with several remarking on how practical and useful the advice is. Some of the Early Career Teachers currently thriving at BPSSC, were first introduced at previous Preservice Teacher Breakfast events. Thanks to this semester’s batch of preservice teachers for your commitment to learning. We are look forward with anticipation to the next one in Semester 2!

Ms West – Year 8
Welcome back to Term 2 at Bellbird Park State Secondary College. We hope all Year 8 students and their families had a happy holiday.
This term students have been working towards developing their social interactions with peers and the wider school community. A number of students have been involved in the Leadership Sessions which are held every Wednesday at first lunch in the PAC. RISE Representatives have been presenting at assemblies and organising lunch-times activities. Many others students have been involved in Cultural Night activities, Rugby League games, musical rehearsals, dance rehearsals and extracurricular activities. We encourage all Year 8 students to be involved in all the opportunities presented to them. By being involved in an array of school activities allows students to develop leadership and relationships skills, strengthens their team bonds and enables them to take action, and be accountable, for their own learning.
This term many external organisations will be delivering presentations to the Year 8 cohort. These presentations will focus on equity and diversity, mental fitness and positive-mindset and are all aligned with the Australian Curriculum. At Bellbird Park State Secondary College, we believe in preparing all students for a successful future and provide a number of opportunities for students to strengthen these skills.
Attendance at school is critical and being on time to all classes with the necessary equipment is part of the Bellbird Park State Secondary College R.I.S.E. Expectations. Please remind students to pack their school bag the night before with the correct equipment and remind them to uphold R.I.S.E. while they are at school and attend every class on time.
As the assessment period begins, we encourage all students to check in with their teachers and ask clarifying questions regarding assessments, work towards their academic goal they set in Pathways, attend Homework Centre and seek advice from the Year 8 team regarding assessments. This week in Pathways, all Year 8 students will be guided through Assessment Culture at Bellbird Park State Secondary College.
We encourage all Year 8 families to book Parent Teacher Interviews. An interview will provide you with the opportunity to learn about and discuss your child’s academic progress and social and emotional wellbeing while at school. Interviews will be held on Thursday 23 May from 1.40pm to 5.30pm in the Sports Hall. We thank you in advance for taking part in your child's learning journey.
Ms Scull – Year 11 & 12
Year 11 - YLEAD
In Week 1 of this term, Year 11 students participated in an all-day incursion facilitated by yLead. The day began with students reflecting on the impact their actions can have in their senior years, both individually and as a cohort, with and without a badge. Students were encouraged to embrace the time they have left and create a legacy, as well as actively build meaningful connections.
There was lots of laughter as our students worked together as a cohort to learn a group dance and take on the skipping rope challenge. As a group, they met their goal of passing through the skipping rope in a record time.
The purpose of this day is to bring the cohort together, build confidence and also encourage them to apply for a Leadership position in 2025.
Furthermore, students are reminded to attend the Weekly Lunchtime Leadership sessions on Wednesdays Lunch 1 in the Lecture Theatre if they would like to apply for a leadership position. Applications open in Week 6 and due Monday of Week 10. Year 8 and 11 students can receive an application form from their Head of Year.
Year 12
We have finalised the final round of jersey orders. The second order is due to arrive by the approx. 28th June. The third order is due to arrive around the 26th of July.
For now students are reminded to keep their year to date attendance over 90% to ensure they are eligible for End of Year Event – the Formal and Mystery Bus Tour. Students can obtain their attendance percentage from their roll class teacher every Thursday. Other pre-requisites for End of Year Events will be communicated to parents and students in the coming weeks.
