4 April 2025
From the Principal

At Bellbird Park State Secondary College, we honour the Jagera, Yuggera, and Ugarapul peoples as the Traditional Custodians of this land and acknowledge the Purga and Deebing Creek Mission Descendants for their deep connection to Country. We are committed to embedding First Nations perspectives throughout our school, respecting the knowledge, culture, and traditions of Elders past and present. Through meaningful partnerships and educational initiatives, we strive to create an inclusive learning environment that celebrates and empowers First Nations students and communities.
As we approach the end of Term 1, I’ve taken a moment to reflect on what has been an energising and inspiring start to the year at Bellbird Park State Secondary College. It has been a true privilege to connect with our students, staff, and families, and to see our vision for student agency come to life across the college.
Our culture—grounded in diversity, inclusion, and community-led leadership—continues to grow stronger, creating a school environment where every student is empowered to learn, lead, and succeed.
Rising Through Challenge
This term hasn’t been without its challenges. The disruption caused by Ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred tested our resilience. But what stood out was the unity, determination, and care shown by our school community.
To our staff—thank you for your unwavering professionalism and support. To our students—your adaptability, optimism, and commitment to learning have been nothing short of commendable. Whether preparing for assessments, representing the college in sporting competitions, or contributing to school events, you have consistently lived out our RISE with SPIRIT values: Responsibility, Integrity, Support, and Effort.
Student Leadership in Action
One of the highlights of this term has been working alongside our student leaders on projects that spark meaningful change. Through our partnership with the Youth Impact Foundation, students have explored social impact, equity, and capability-building initiatives that extend beyond the school gates.
Their passion and willingness to lead from their values has been genuinely inspiring—and a powerful reminder that when young people own their values, they own their impact.

Farewell and New Opportunities
Next term, we bid farewell to Jason English, who has accepted a new Deputy Principal role at Mansfield State High School. As a foundation leader of our college, Jason has made an incredible contribution to the growth of Bellbird Park, and we thank him for his leadership and impact.
We will run a state wide merit selection process to appoint a new Deputy Principal. In the interim, Ben Robson will step into the role of Acting Deputy Principal for Senior Schooling, and we thank Liz McNulty for her support of the Maths Faculty during this transition.
As communicated earlier, the Department of Education is finalising the recruitment process for the Executive Principal role at Indooroopilly State High School. While this process continues, I will remain as Acting Principal at Bellbird Park SSC into Term 2, providing continuity and stability for our students, staff, and families.
Embedding Reconciliation
Another proud milestone this term was the launch of our Reconciliation Action Plan and the opening of our Warrama Room, symbolising our deepening commitment to First Nations education.
In partnership with the Wirrinyah Gurrnung Corporation, we’ve begun an exciting journey—centering First Nations voices in our learning experiences. Students have started learning the Yagara language, connecting with the rich cultural heritage and knowledge of the Yagara people.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to Lynda Maybanks, Larena and Lyreisha Thompson, and the entire Thompson family for their leadership, and to Dianne Pashen and David Moran for their ongoing contributions. To our language teachers and educators—thank you for approaching this work with such open minds and hearts.
Our First Nations Student Leadership Program has also provided invaluable opportunities for students to lead with cultural pride and purpose, further embedding reconciliation in the fabric of our college.

A Term of Spirit and Celebration
Term 1 has been packed with moments that reflect the strength of our school spirit. From the Student Leaders' Design Sprint with our Executive Team and Heads of Year to the development of new student-led initiatives, it’s been energising to witness creativity, innovation, and connection in action.
Looking ahead, I’m especially excited for our Athletics Carnival and other upcoming events in Term 2 that will continue to showcase our collective identity, teamwork, and passion.
Congratulations to Our Students
To our Year 7 and 9 students—congratulations on your effort during NAPLAN. We understand the preparation and persistence required, and we’re proud of your focus.
To our Year 11 and 12 students, your commitment during exam block has been outstanding. Your determination to strive for your personal best reflects the values we hold high at Bellbird Park.
Looking Ahead
As we head into the holidays, I encourage all students to take the time to rest, recharge, and reflect on their accomplishments this term.
I look forward to welcoming everyone back in Term 2 as we continue to grow stronger together—driven by a shared commitment to learning, leadership, and community impact.
Wishing all families a safe and relaxing holiday.

Celebrating a Fantastic Start to 2025
As Term 1 comes to an end, we take a moment to reflect on the incredible achievements of our students and the rich cultural experiences that have shaped the start of the year. From our Year 7 students embracing high school life to vibrant cultural celebrations, this term has been filled with growth, learning, and community spirit.
Year 7 Successes
Our Year 7 students have made an exceptional start to their high school journey, demonstrating resilience, curiosity, and a strong commitment to learning. They have quickly adapted to new routines, built friendships, and engaged in a wide range of learning experiences. With the support of dedicated teachers and mentors, they are developing the skills and confidence needed for success. We are incredibly proud of their achievements so far and look forward to seeing them continue to flourish.
Cultural Fest 2025 – Save the Date!
We are excited to announce that Culture Fest 2025 will take place on Thursday, 15 August, from 12:00 – 3:00 pm. This much-anticipated event is a celebration of the diverse cultures that enrich our school community. Students, families, and community members will have the opportunity to experience cultural performances, traditional foods, interactive workshops, and much more. We invite everyone to be part of this vibrant event and celebrate the many cultures that make BPSSC unique.
Honouring Culture and Community
This term, BPSSC has embraced opportunities to celebrate and recognise cultural diversity. Some of oour cultural dance groups had an opportunity to represent BPSSC at the Goodna SS Harmony Day celebrations, promoting the message that “everyone belongs” through activities that highlighted inclusivity and respect. We also acknowledge the achievements of our Indigenous students who have been awarded QATSIF (Queensland Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Foundation) scholarships, supporting their education and leadership development. Additionally, students have engaged in various cultural programs, strengthening their understanding of First Nations perspectives and celebrating the diverse backgrounds that shape our school.
As we move into Term 2, we look forward to continuing this momentum, fostering a school culture that values learning, inclusivity, and respect. Wishing all our students and families a restful and enjoyable break!
Mrs Melissa Fields
Deputy Principal Year 7

It has been a tough but rewarding term for students at Bellbird Park. Despite the disruptions of Cyclone Alfred, students and staff have bounced back to not only complete subject assessments but also to complete the re-arranged NAPLAN (Year 7/9) with a record completion rate of 87% for our Year 7/9 cohorts. Next year will see our Year 7 and Year 9 students all complete this on their own devices (BYO) as we start to phase out our computer labs.
Teachers are also now busy marking and moderating assessment so they can enter their student progress marks for reporting in Yr11/12 or document interim progress notes for Year 7-10 which can be discussed at the upcoming Parent Teacher Interviews

Term 1- Interim Progress Reporting Year 11 & 12

Senior student reports have been emailed out today. As always at Bellbird, we place a strong emphasis on effort and engagement. Regardless of a student’s academic ability or background, consistent effort and attendance can lead to meaningful growth and progress.
Effort matters. It’s something every student can control, and it's a value we hold in high regard. Showing up, participating, trying their best, and demonstrating positive behaviour – these are the habits that pave the way for success, both at school and beyond.
As a parent of three boys myself, I know the first thing I check on their report card is not the academic grades, but their level of effort. Academic success doesn’t come easily to everyone, but trying hard and doing the right thing always counts. What I want most for my children – and what I believe most parents want – is for them to grow into good people who give life their best shot and never give up.
Let’s continue working together to encourage our students to attend school, engage positively, and give their best effort – every single day.

Parent Teacher Interviews – Term 2
Parent Teacher Interviews will take place in Week 3 of Term 2, on Thursday 8 May, from 1:40pm to 5:30pm in the Sports Hall. Bookings for interviews will be made through Daymap, with the system opening to parents and carers on Monday, 28 April at 6:00pm. Booking instructions, reminders, and a step-by-step guide will be emailed to families in the lead-up to ensure a smooth process. These interviews are a valuable opportunity to connect with your child’s teachers, discuss their progress, and work together to support their learning journey. We encourage all families to take part.
Research shows that parents and carers have a significant impact on their children’s educational achievements.
“In fact, parental engagement overrides all other factors that have been shown to influence a child’s achievement. It is therefore critical that teachers and parents develop effective relationships to bridge student learning between home and school”
Having parent contact with teachers is also a great way in keeping communication channels open about what is going on at school and how you and the teacher can best support your child in their growth at Bellbird Park.
to reach their full potential.
Mr Gavin Grant
Deputy Principal Year 8

On Wednesday, 26 March, the College celebrated the grand opening of the Warrama Room. This is a very special place where students in Year 7 and 8 are supported with academic assistance while maintaining a connection to culture. The College is extremely fortunate and grateful to the Yagera Peoples who have granted permission for the College to use the word – ‘Warrama’ meaning ‘rising’ which aligns to the College values of RISE. It is through Warrama that students rise academically, personally and culturally.
Creating the Warrama space is only possible through the spirit and generosity of the Yagara People. We extend a heart-felt yalway to the Elders, Language Owners and Traditional Custodians. Yalway for attending the event, sharing culture and language, and the strong relationship you have built with the community.
We also recognise the families and community members who attended the event along with our students. A special thank you to Goodna State School and their Deadly Dancers who joined the Bellbird Park State Secondary dancers to perform Gari Gynda Narmi.

Year 11 and 12 Report Cards
Today, parents and carers of Year 11 and 12 students at Bellbird Park State Secondary College will received their student’s report cards via email. This is an important opportunity for reflection, goal setting, and academic growth. As a parent or caregiver, your guidance can have a significant impact on how your student interprets and responds to their results. Here are some strategies to assist them:
- Start on a Positive Note
Begin the conversation by highlighting areas of success. Acknowledge their efforts and improvements, not just their overall achievement. It’s like cricket —celebrate the good runs, even if you didn’t hit a century! - Maintain Open Communication
Encourage your student to express their thoughts about their results. Ask open-ended questions such as, "What accomplishments are you most proud of?" or "Which areas would you like to improve?" Avoid the classic "We need to talk"—it makes everyone nervous! - Focus on Growth and Development
Rather than dwelling on lower marks, help them identify steps to enhance their performance. Collaborate on setting realistic, achievable goals. If they claim their teacher “just doesn’t like them,” remind them that maths equations don’t hold grudges. - Explore Available Support
If your student is facing challenges in a subject, consider the support options offered by the school, such as teacher consultations, study groups, tutoring services, or using DayMap to track assignments and upcoming assessments. - Encourage a Balanced Approach
Academic success is important, but so is overall well-being. Ensure your student maintains a healthy balance between study, rest, and recreational activities. Even the most dedicated students need a break—remind them that binge-watching an entire series in one night does not count as “rest.” - Engage with the School
If you have concerns about your student’s progress, reach out to their teachers. Open communication with the school can provide valuable insights and support strategies. - Make the Most of the Holidays
With the holidays approaching, it's a great time for your student to take a well-earned break. Encourage them to rest and recharge, but also help them plan a balanced approach. They can use the time to catch up on any assignments or set personal academic goals for the upcoming term. A little forward-thinking can set them up for success in the new term—like preparing for the next innings.
Report cards represent just one part of your student’s educational journey. With encouragement and the right support, they can use this as an opportunity for continued learning and success.
If you have any questions, please contact the school. Together, we can support our students in achieving their best.

Term 1 Highlights in the Diversity Hub
As Term 1 wraps up, we’re celebrating some exciting achievements and new initiatives at our school!
We’d like to extend a warm welcome to our new staff members, Andrew Blizard and Amarani Jayarathnanathan, who have joined our team this year.

A major highlight this term was the opening of the sensory room in F block, providing a calming space for students who need it. We’ve also expanded our support areas with the new Diversity Hub check-in space and assessment support space, ensuring all students have access to the help they need to manage their social and emotional wellbeing and academic success. Year 7 case managed students and their families also had the chance to connect at a special meet and greet session, which provided an opportunity for parents to see the Diversity Hub and meet the Diverse Learners team.
In the classroom, the Flying Squad has been delivering intensive support in core subjects, helping students strengthen their skills. Meanwhile, the Life Pathways class has been running a fantastic small business venture—packaging fruit and veggie boxes—while also recycling bottles and cans to raise funds for the P&C. The Life Pathways students also enjoyed an exciting excursion to Queens Park Nature Centre on April 26th, where they explored local wildlife and nature and enjoyed morning tea at the Queens Park Café.

Our support programs are also thriving, with the Phoenix Foodies and Garden Club back in action, offering students opportunities to build social connections and support their emotional well-being.
Staff have been busy too, engaging in professional development on the NDIS and planning pathways beyond school, ensuring we can better guide students toward their futures.
It’s been a fantastic start to the year, and we look forward to more success in Term 2. Check back next term to hear about the success of our Assistive Technology Training Programs and Connections Class.

Mr Matt Bishop – Year 7
🌟 A Strong Start for Year 7 – We’re So Proud! 🌟
As Term 1 draws to a close, I want to take a moment to reflect on how proud we are of our Year 7 students and the remarkable way they’ve transitioned into high school life at Bellbird Park State Secondary College.
From day one, our Year 7s have shown a fantastic attitude, embracing their new routines, navigating timetables, getting to know a wide range of teachers, and becoming more confident in their surroundings. Their commitment to wearing the uniform with pride, showing positive behaviour, and maintaining strong attendance has been outstanding – and hasn’t gone unnoticed.
Already, they’ve taken part in some incredible firsts – representing Bellbird Park at their very first Gala Day across a range of sports, engaging in cultural dances and school-wide events, and stepping up to face NAPLAN with resilience and maturity. Despite the uncertainty caused by recent cyclone-related disruptions, our students adapted beautifully to changes in routine and the extra pressure that comes with national testing.
Student voice and leadership are really important to us, and it’s been fantastic to see this in action through the election of our RISE Representatives across each pathway. These students will play a key role in shaping student experiences and representing the voices of their peers – something we value deeply.
And we’re not done yet! On the final day of term, Year 7 students will proudly participate in their very first House event – the annual school cross country. Whether they’re representing Fearnley, Geitz, Thurston, or Freeman, we know they’ll bring energy, team spirit, and house pride to the day.
To our Year 7 students: Well done on everything you’ve achieved so far. We can’t wait to see what you’ll do next!
💙 Bellbird Buddies – Building Connections Across Year Levels 💙
At Bellbird Park State Secondary College, we know that strong relationships are the foundation of a positive school experience. That’s why we’re thrilled to introduce Bellbird Buddies – a new initiative connecting our senior students in Years 11 and 12 with our newest students in Year 7.
Every Wednesday during first break, our senior leaders host a relaxed and welcoming session filled with fun, games, and conversation. From card games and outdoor activities to chill-out chats and team challenges, everything is student-led and designed to help Year 7s feel at home.
This is more than just play – it's about building friendships, sharing advice, and strengthening the supportive culture we value so highly at Bellbird. Our senior students are fantastic role models, and we’re incredibly proud of the leadership, kindness, and energy they bring to each session.
Whether it’s helping with a locker code, offering a tour of the school, or just sharing a laugh over a game of Uno, Bellbird Buddies is already becoming a highlight of the week for many. We look forward to seeing these connections grow as the term continues!

✏️ Setting Up for Success – Year 7 Supplies ✏️
Starting high school is a big step, and at Bellbird Park State Secondary College, we’re committed to making that transition as smooth and supported as possible for our Year 7 students.
As part of our focus on learning and wellbeing, we’ve provided every Year 7 student with a fully stocked pencil case – ready to go from day one. From pens and pencils to highlighters and rulers, it’s all there to support our learners in every subject, every day.
We’re also incredibly grateful to SEQ Water for their generous support in providing a reusable water bottle for each of our Year 7s. Staying hydrated is key to concentration and overall wellbeing, and now every student has their own bottle to use at school and beyond.
These small touches make a big difference. It’s just one of the ways we’re showing our commitment to our students’ learning journey and helping them feel prepared, confident, and cared for as they begin high school. We can’t wait to see what they achieve this year!

Mr Ramon Carreon – Year 8

As Term 1 comes to an end, we want to celebrate the fantastic start our Year 8 students have had to the year! From academic achievements to exciting incursions and sporting success, our students have demonstrated dedication, enthusiasm, and a strong sense of community.
One of the highlights of the term was our Leadership Incursion, where students explored the qualities of effective leadership and teamwork. It was inspiring to see so many students step up and engage in activities that challenged them to think critically and support one another.

Academically, our students have worked incredibly hard, and their efforts were recognised at our recent Academic Awards ceremony. Congratulations to all students who received awards – your commitment to learning is commendable!
We were also fortunate to welcome guest speakers from Queensland Rail, who provided valuable insights into rail safety and the importance of responsible behaviour around trains. Their presentation was both informative and engaging, ensuring our students are well-equipped with knowledge that can keep them and their peers safe.

In the arts, our music students have been showcasing their incredible talents, with some fantastic performances throughout the term. Their dedication to practice and passion for music have been evident, and we look forward to seeing them continue to shine.

Sport has also played a major role this term, with students representing the school in various competitions and demonstrating outstanding sportsmanship. Whether on the field or court, our Year 8s have shown great determination and team spirit.

Overall, it has been an excellent start to the year. We are incredibly proud of our Year 8 students and look forward to seeing them continue to grow and achieve great things in Term 2!
Have a wonderful and restful break!
Ms Pippa West – Year 9
As we head towards the end of Term 1, Year 9 can feel very proud that they have consistently demonstrated the RISE Expectations. Their commitment to Respect, Integrity, Support and Effort has been evident in both their academic efforts and contributions to school community.
Year 9 student wear their Bellbird State Secondary College uniform with pride and continue to demonstrate school spirit through their involvement in various activities and events.
Year 9 Junior School Leaders and RISE Representatives have created games and activities for Year 7 and 8 students to participate in at lunchtimes. This demonstrates their ongoing commitment to ensuring all Junior School students feel supported and included within the school community.
We also thank Year 9 students and staff for being part of Week 8 is Great! This team approach ensures students have access to fun and engaging activities that reflect the Australian Curriculum, RISE Expectations and school spirit.
Year 9 students have been actively engaged in Wellbeing lessons and learnt strategies on how to manage their time effectively when preparing for assessments and exams. This is a crucial skill as they progress through their schooling and transition into Senior Years.
Term Two brings a number of opportunities for Year 9 Junior School Leaders, RISE Representatives and their peers to be involved in student voice. Alongside Year 7 and 8 RISE Representatives, they will work together to form a committee dedicated to ensuring all students feel included in school community activities and events while also developing their leadership skills.
We also welcome Year 9 students to take the opportunity to participate in the ANZAC Day service, demonstrating respect and remembrance for those who have served.
Well-done Year 9 for a fantastic Term 1 – we look forward to seeing your continued growth and success in Term 2!

The Arts Update

Year 12 Cert III Music – Song writing & Studio Mixing
Our Year 12 Certificate III in Music students have been busy honing their skills in songwriting and music production. Recently, they’ve been exploring the art of composing simple songs—developing melodies, crafting lyrics, and arranging chords. Taking their creations to the next level, they’ve also been learning how to mix in a studio environment, experimenting with EQ, effects, and layering to bring their songs to life. It’s been an exciting journey of creativity and technical skill, and we can’t wait to hear the final results!

Year 12 Media Arts in Practice - Revisiting camera skills
After a long couple of weeks of evaluating for their assessment, year 12 Media students reconnected with the DSLR cameras as they walked around the college interviewing both staff and students about their experience at Bellbird. Some questions included "How would you describe the culture and community at Bellbird?" or "What is the best thing about being at Bellbird". It was inspiring to see the positive experiences both staff and students have had during their time at BPSSC.

Year 7 Drama - Building Skills
After completing their assessment performance, year 7 Drama used their current performance skills in a range of drama games to build their understanding of how to adapt elements of drama in various ways. What a term they have had!

Extra-Curricular Dance
Hip Hop and Dance Company (Jazz) are well under way training for their first upcoming competition of the year. Our numbers continue to increase and we are looking forward to what term 2 brings us! If your student wants to have the opportunity to represent BPSSC in various competitions this year, please contact Mrs Kersnovski or visit H block for more information. Monday and Wednesdays 3-4:30pm.

Grade 11 Visual Arts in Practice
Year 11 students are actively exploring a range of creative techniques as they develop their artist books. Through hands-on experimentation with materials, textures, and artistic processes, they are investigating how different visual and tactile elements can enhance their ideas.

Hospitality Update

Phoenix Café – Open to seniors and staff
The Pheonix Café is run by the Hospitality department and is open to our seniors and staff. The Hospitality students at Bellbird Park make up the majority of our staff and are rostered onto shifts as a part of their hospitality assessment. Our current Yr 12 Hospitality students have been working in the Café for a year and are about to hand over to the nervous, but excited Yr 11 Hospitality students. The students will be rotating through all the different job roles; from being cashier, to being a barista, all-rounder, milkshakes, frappes, or the food station.
We are open on Tuesday and Wednesday first break only and Friday both breaks. We offer a range of different sweet and savoury foods, and hot and cold beverages that form our standard menu each week. We also add a weekly special for the week to offer variety and something new. Here are some of our recent specials to give you an idea of what is available:

Year 10 Hospitality - Café Beverages unit
Throughout the term the Yr 10 Hospitality students have been trying a range of different Café beverages. They were given the scenario:
You work at a local café and there is a competition coming up and you have entered with 1-2 of your workmates. You are required to create a new limited addition promotional beverage that would be an exciting new addition to any café menu. You will trial this beverage and create a suitable promotion for a café of your chosen product. You will need to present your advertisement, and your new limited addition promotional beverage to a panel of judges.
In the different Hospitality classes the students were able to trial their chosen beverage flavour combinations to come up with a final product. The ideas ranged from matcha based drinks, to fruity concoctions, to different milkshake combinations. We pulled our expert panel of judges together from our amazing staff at Bellbird Park SSC to help us judge the groups final promotional Café beverages.
This project helps them to develop necessary skills; like teamwork, creating a unique product and managing a design folio. This task leads into their next project in term 2, which will be all about Eat Street. Students should be looking out for the permission note and payment that will be coming out shortly to go on the Eat Street excursion next term.

Yr 10 Interview to Impress
A limited number of Year 10 students were offered the opportunity to do Interview 2 Impress (i2i). This was a one-day program designed to equip students from high-needs schools with the necessary, practical skills needed to engage in employment options beyond school.
The focus of i2i is to allow students to experience realistic interview scenarios in a corporate environment. It enables students to test and practice the theory they learn at school by working with a mentor who is able to provide direct and relevant feedback and advice based on their own job interview experiences. Topics covered include effective non-verbal communication, building rapport, a typical interview structure and questions.
The i2i workshop was held in Brisbane city at the QIC building and students were amazed by the corporate venue. The facilitator took the participants through a series of activities designed to build their understanding of job interview techniques and processes. Students were actively involved in learning through activities based on ‘doing’ rather than theory.
The venue also put on a delicious lunch for the students to partake before the final session where they were put through their paces and put into practice they had just learnt. They were interviewed by their mentors who came from a range of career backgrounds from lawyers, to HR, recruitment and also finance as a few examples. The students worked with their mentors on a one to two basis, were interviewed and asked relevant questions. After the interview they were given immediate feedback and could re-interview to see if they could form better responses to different interview questions.

Science Update

Outstanding Effort by Rubylee on Mount Everest Educational Poster
Rubylee has done a fantastic job creating an informative and engaging educational poster about Mount Everest and the formation of metamorphic rock. Her poster beautifully explains how heat and pressure deep within the Earth transform existing rocks into metamorphic rocks, such as the marble and schist found in Everest’s towering peaks.
Not only did Rubylee highlight the geological processes that shape Everest, but she also explored the practical uses of metamorphic rocks in everyday life. Rubylee has demonstrated a strong understanding of Earth’s processes and the importance of geology in our world. Well done, Rubylee!
